North Platte, Nebraska — Aug 30, 2003
With a big point lead, Jeremy Herbst of NP needed to start the Mini-Sprint A Feature to secure his title. He did but did not get any higher than sixth place. Bob DeRouchey took the lead from fellow heat race winner Randy Miller of Cozad on the second lap. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg was not far behind him. Despite the six cautions, Kennicutt could not shake the lead or the win from DeRouchey, who completed his second win in as many nights. Nic Sutton of Arvada, Colo. drove home in third place, followed by Gothenburg drivers Rick Putnam and heat race winner Steve Aitken.

North Platte, Nebraska — Aug 23, 2003
The Mini-Sprints shined in their 20 lap event, with the caution not coming out until three laps to go, when a tire used to keep the drivers from cutting the corners was thrown out onto the track after a car ran over it. Bob DeRouchey sponsored a candy toss for the kids earlier in the night, but would not share anything with the rest of the sixteen car field during the first seventeen laps of the race. After the caution, Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg and Nic Sutton of Arvada, Colo. lined up right on the tail of his car. DeRouchey’s car had not been running right of late, but one would not know it as he pulled away from the duo to earn the win. Sutton’s run from row six would end in second place, passing Kennicutt on those last three laps. Rick Putnam of Gothenburg finished in fourth place, while Jim Hoatson of NP finished in fifth. Arden Myers of McCook took the B Feature win to get him in the main event. The heat races were won by Bob Swedeen of Alliance, DeRouchey, and Putnam.

Another Win For Robert and his Favorite Fan
» photo by Speed Sports Racing Photography
North Platte, Nebraska — Aug16, 2003
The Mini-Sprint A Feature that was rained out on lap four last week was completely restarted. Jeff Wignall of Alliance took the lead and had it until lap eight when he tangled with Troy Douglas of NP as he was trying to pass him. Wignall got back his spot, but the car was not as fast after that. Rick Putnam took the lead away from him on the restart. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg appeared to be ready to take second when his car gave up, moving Jeremy Herbst of NP into that spot. Herbst got by Wignall for second place, far enough behind Rick Putnam to not shake away the win. Arden Myers of McCook and Jim Hoatson of NP finished up the top five finishers. Wignall won his heat race later in the night, and again had the lead in the regular Mini-Sprint A Feature. His car later faded and he dropped out of the race. Heat winners Jamey Kennicutt and Nic Sutton then became the top two drivers, with Sutton getting the lead on lap four. It was only Sutton’s fourth start on the track, but a win the week before Ft. Morgan, Colo. gave him confidence to stay ahead of the veteran Kennicutt for his first Lincoln County Raceway A Feature win. Arden Myers improved to third place in the second feature, Matt Welch of NP took home fourth place, and Rick Putnam finished in fifth.

North Platte, Nebraska — July 26, 2003
Heat winner Suzanne Way of Lexington started on the front row of the Mini-Sprint A Feature, but the pleasure out front was taken away by Jeff Wignall. Wignall may have thought he was on easy street when he got out front, but he soon found himself hounded by a fellow heat winner, Rick Putnam of Gothenburg. Putnam worked him hard, but could not deny Wignall his second consecutive A Feature win. Nick Sutton of Arvada, Colo. came from deep in the field to finish in third place, ahead of Jeremy Herbst of NP, who started just as deep. Steve Aitken of Gothenburg finished in fifth place.

John’s nephew Darren Berry was fast enough in the Mini-Sprint class to take not only the heat race win, but also dominated the A Feature to double up his fun. Greg Billings of Frederick, Colo. spent much of the time in second place until he drove off the backstretch and came back on the track in the same position, one lap down. With him out of the way, McCook drivers swept the top five spots: Berry, Arden Myers, Rob Henry, Mark Eiler, and Larry Davis.

Left Front Tire Not On The Ground Again
» photo by Speed Sports Racing Photography
North Platte, Nebraska — July 19, 2003
Three caution periods occurred during the Mini-Sprint A Feature, but two of those stoppages were as a result of the tires that line the inside line getting kicked out onto the track. Jeff Wignall did not kick any of the tires out onto the track with his car, but he did hold onto the bottom line of the track once he got to the front of the field and took the win. Nick Sutton of Arvada, Colo. started back in row four, but was able to work his way through the field for a second place finish. Gothenburg’s Jamey Kennicutt finished in third place, ahead of B Feature winner Jeremy Herbst of NP and Arden Myers of McCook. Wignall, Myers, Meddie Cote of Cozad, and Matt Welch of NP won the heat races.

Fellow heat race winner Meddie Cote of Cozad finished in second place, in front of Greg Billings of Frederick, Colo., heat winner Jeremy Herbst of NP, and Jim Hoatson, also of NP. Matt Welch of NP was the other heat race victor, while Arden Myers of McCook snagged the B Feature win.

Getting Ready For The Night Of Races
» photo by Speed Sports Racing Photography
McCook, Nebraska — July 11, 2003
Jeff Wignall earned some retribution in the Mini-Sprint A Feature. On June 13, he was leading the main race when his car overheated and his night ended. Greg Billings of Frederick, Colo. had the lead of this night’s race when he had a poor restart, getting passed by fellow heat race winner Darren Berry of McCook and Wignall. Berry would lead until he looped his car in front of Wignall, bringing out the caution and causing the last change for the lead. Wignall held Billings off for the win. Arden Myers of McCook finished in third place, which sealed the deal on his first ever McCook Speedway track championship. Berry raced back to fourth place, while Jim Hoatson of NP finished in fifth.

North Platte, Nebraska — July 5, 2003
The Mini-Sprint drivers were showing they could be as creative off the track as they could be on the track. After Arden Myers of McCook rolled on the opening lap of the A Feature, he went to the pits and brought out a backup car. That was not allowed, so he had to take that car to the pits. Rick Putnam of Gothenburg appeared to have finished third place in the race, only to have Bill Berry of McCook jump out of the car after the race. Since Putnam qualified the car for the feature, and Berry did not start in the back of the lowest feature after the change, his run was disallowed. Darren Berry stayed out front of all the extra curricular activities and out of the “rules interpretations” to hold off a late run by point leader Jeremy Herbst of NP for the win. Randy Miller of Cozad was credited with third place, and Gothenburg drivers Jamey Kennicutt and Steve Aitken were credited with fourth and fifth. Newcomer Nick Sutton of Arvada, Colo. won the B Feature. Herbst, Berry, Jim Hoatson of NP, and Greg Billings of Frederick, Colo. won the big Mini-Sprint heat races.

The Mini-Sprints again showed their speed on the big track, as the small cars zoomed their way around the track. The lead changed four times in two laps when Arden Myers of McCook was able to take over. His lead would be short-lived, as heat winner Bob DeRouchey found his way from row four to the head of the class. John Webster of NP started out in row five and got by Myers two laps later, but could not contend with the lead DeRouchey had over the field. Rob Henry of McCook and Jim Hoatson of NP finished in fourth and fifth places

Greg And Bill Berry Running McCook

McCook, Nebraska — June 20, 2003
For the second straight week, the Mini-Sprints drove on the big track. In the heat races, all drivers but for Greg Billings and Bob DeRouchey of Fort Collins, Colo. took the wings off the tops of their cars because of the wind, and all finished behind the two Colorado drivers in the two heat races. The other drivers put the wings back on the cars for the Feature race. Arden Myers took the lead from fellow McCook resident Rob Henry on lap four and set his sights on his first ever McCook Speedway A Feature win, but Billings took command of the race one lap later and drove away for the win. DeRouchey could do no better than third place for the night, followed by McCook drivers Darren Berry and Mark Eiler.

No one seemed to want the Mini-Sprint A Feature lead. Nate Moerke of NP had it for a lap, then dropped out after a lap. Fellow heat race winner Randy Miller of Cozad took over, only have problems and fall way back in the field. Bob DeRouchey finally got a grasp of the lead and held on for the win. Jeremy Herbst of NP came on late to get by Rick Putnam of Gothenburg for second place. Steve Aitken of Gothenburg finished ahead of Jim Hoatson of NP for fourth. Meddie Cote of Cozad was the B Feature winner, while Matt Welch of NP won the other heat race for the Mini-Sprint division.

McCook, Nebraska — June 13, 2003
The Mini-Sprint track was awash after heavy rains took it out of commission, and they were forced to move onto the big track. The big track was super tacky, smooth, and fast, and that had the Mini-Sprints turning faster times than the IMCA Modifieds. Jeff Wignall of Alliance was enjoying flying around the track with heat winner Greg Billings hot on tail when the radiator line gave way on his car, causing him to drop out of the race. Billings had open road ahead of him after putting down an effort to take the lead on the restart by Darren Barry of McCook and zipped away with the win. Arden Myers of McCook finished in third place, followed by Bob Swedeen of Alliance, and Bill Berry of McCook.

It took four starts to get the Mini-Sprint A Feature going. Despite that, fifteen of the sixteen starters were able to make the fourth start. Bob Swedeen took over the race once it started and would not be denied leading during the 15 lap race. Jeremy Herbst of NP had to start back in row six, but made it interesting as he passed ten cars to finish in second place. Steve Aitken of Gothenburg, Randy Miller of Cozad, and Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Colo. rounded out the top five. Rick Putnam of Gothenburg was the B Feature winner. Miller, DeRouchey, Mike Strand of Broomfield, Colo. and Rob Henry of McCook won the heat races.

Bob DeRouchey had a big lead in the Mini-Sprint A Feature, and he needed it after his spark plug broke on the last lap. John Berry’s nephew Darren was in the right place at the right time in the Mini-Sprint main event. Heat winner Greg Billings of Frederick, Colo. had a huge lead over the field when a tire rod on his car broke, and that allowed the field to track him down. Darren Berry was the first one by and took command of the race with only two laps to go. Darren’s dad Bill, the other Mini-Sprint heat race winner, tried to deny the younger Berry the win, but Darren would not be denied his second win of the year. Billings was able to finish in fourth place, and was the only non-McCook area driver in the top five, as Arden Myers finished in third and Rob Henry finished in fifth.

North Platte, Nebraska — May 31, 2003
The Mini-Sprints had tipoveritis all night. Fortunately, most of the tipovers were easy rolls and no one was hurt. Suzanne Way of Lexington led the first lap of the Mini-Sprint A Feature, but it was not long before Bob DeRouchey’s yellow car came buzzing to the front. DeRouchey has had some mechanical failures lately that have put him out of races, but nothing was to sting him on this night, as he won the race well in front of Rick Putnam of Gothenburg, Arden Myers of McCook, Meddie Cote of Cozad, Bob Swedeen of Alliance, and the rest of the field by a large margin. DeRouchey was joined by Steve Aitken of Gothenburg and NP drivers Jeremy Herbst and Jim Hoatson as heat race winners. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg had one of the cars to tip in the heat races, but did manage a B Feature win.

McCook, Nebraska — May 23, 2003
The Mini-Sprints were eager to put on a caution-free race, but circumstances and the desire of all of the drivers to be at the front of the pack in the first corner cancelled their hope of it. Jim Hoatson of NP won his heat race, took the lead on the opening lap after the restart, and had a nice lead over Arden Myers of NP when mechanical woes ended his night. Myers inheritance lasted for a while, but not as long as he would have liked. Bob DeRouchey, the other heat winner, found his way to second place, then powered by Myers for his first ever Feature win at McCook Speedway. Bill Berry of McCook finished in third place, ahead of Bob Swedeen of Alliance and Rob Henry of McCook.

Rick Putnam and Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg, Meddie Cote of Cozad, and Arden Myers won the Mini-Sprint heat races, and Rob Henry of McCook won the B Feature, and those races set the field for the fifteen lap Mini-Sprint A Feature. Putnam led the race up to lap nine, after a caution period for Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Co., who was running in the top three at the time. On the restart, Putnam jumped the gun on the field, and was sent to be back of the pack, handing the lead to Mike Strand of Broomfield, Co. On that restart, Jim Hoatson’s car got back to speed before Strand’s and he made what would be the winning pass and earn his second win of the year. Steve Aitken of Gothenburg ended a good run with a third place, followed by hard-charger Jeremy Herbst of NP and Arden Myers of McCook.

The Mini-Sprint A Feature had a slow start, but even it was not enough to slow down Rick Putnam. Putnam started on row two and had the lead early in the fifteen lap event. Before he could enjoy a victory, he had to battle Arden Myers of McCook and Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Co. The two battled each other, which slowed them down a little. DeRouchey got by Myers for the second spot and came up short in denying Rick Putnam the win. Jeremy Herbst of NP came from the fifth row to finish in fourth place, snatching that from Jamey Kenicutt of Gothenburg on the last lap. Rob Henry of McCook was the B Feature winner. Jeff Wignall of Alliance, Meddie Cote of Cozad, Steve Aitken of Gothenburg, and Herbst won the Mini-Sprint heat races.

The Mini-Sprints, especially Nate Moerke of NP, had early lap woes, as Moerke's car ended up on it's side and three cars were piled up. The pieces were picked up and the races resumed. Greg Billings started on the front row and thought he had a good lead, but was soon joined up front by McCook drivers Bill Berry, Arden Myers, and Rob Henry. Berry was the one who was able to take a shot at taking the lead and win from his fellow heat race winner, but Billings was able to get by a lapped car in time to earn the win. Billings was followed by McCook drivers Berry, Myers, Henry, and Larry Davis, in that order.

The Mini-Sprint A Feature went caution free, but the heats and B Feature was not so clean. Mike Strand of Broomfield, Co. rolled his car in the first heat race of the night. He did get it back together for the B Feature, but was one of the nine drivers to not finish that twelve car race, won by Randy Miller of Cozad. Jim Hoatson started on row two of the A Feature and waited for McCook driver Rob Henry to drive up the track to take the low groove and work him for the lead. Once by, Henry followed Hoatson waiting for him to make a mistake, which he never made. In fact, Hoatson was able to pull away from Henry for a respectable lead at the finish line. Darren Berry of McCook finished in third place, followed by Greg Billings of Frederick, Co., who passed heat race winner Bill Berry of McCook on the last lap for fourth. Bob DeRouchey of Fort Collins, Co. and Jeremy Herbst of NP were the other winners.

"Robert DeRouchey Hot Lapping At McCook"
» photo by Speed Sports Racing Photography
McCook, Nebraska — April 4, 2003
The Mini-Sprint drivers seemed to take to the hardly noticeable changes to corner one, as the corner was much less treacherous as it was at the start of last year. Newcomers Mike Strand and Glen McCoy of NP were the winners of the two heat races, but veteran to the track Mike Eiler of McCook impressed the field early by controlling the lead of the A Feature. Caution flags kept the field close, and Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Co. was able to find a way to take command of the race. His lead was short lived, because Strand had moved from the fifth row to sneak by DeRouchey for the lead. DeRouchey would then fall out of the race with mechanical troubles, leaving Strand out front all alone. McCook driver Arden Myers got by Eiler for second place, while Rob Henry of McCook held Jim Hoatson of North Platte off for fifth place.
