North Platte, Nebraska — Aug 28, 2004
Race Results-

With their points race decided last week, the Mini-Sprints drew for position and ran a twenty lap A Feature. The race was stopped on lap two after Patrick Donnelly of North Platte got some serious air under his car as he rolled the car he was driving in corner three. The young man needed no help from leaving the wreck, but the car was not so lucky. Arden Myers of McCook had the lead from the start of the race and kept the field at bay for several laps. Nic Sutton started in row seven, yet caught up and passed Myers for the lead before lap ten. Point champion Jeremy Herbst of North Platte finally cleared the field and got into second place. He caught Sutton, but fell back a little on the last lap, as Sutton remained out front for the win. Gothenburg drivers Jamey Kennicutt and Rick Putnam battled together for most of the race until Kennicutt fell out, allowing Putnam unabated for third place. Troy Douglas of North Platte has showed improvement of late and topped it off for fourth, while the same could be said for fellow hometown driver Josh Sabin, who finished in fifth place. Eric Sargent took Douglas’s car later in the night and won the Mechanic’s Race.

It was also the last night of points for the Mini-Sprints, and while the race was slowed by only one caution, the last lap was a little wild. Josh Sabin of North Platte felt the second lap was a little wild, as he was the stoppage in action after he rolled his car one time in corner one. Meddie Cote of Cozad paced the race before Sabin’s soft roll, and for many laps afterwards. Jamey Kennicutt and fellow Gothenburg driver Rick Putnam got by Cote and pulled away from the field. Coming around corner four to take the checkered flag, Putnam tried to get under Kennicutt for the win. Instead, the two made contact, sending Kennicutt across the finish line sideways, but in the lead. Putnam was penalized, despite crossing the line in second place. Jeremy Herbst of North Platte was credited with second place and the points championship. Greg Billings of Ft. Collins, Co. ended a good night with third place, Randy Miller of Cozad was credited with fourth place, and Toph Harmon of Holbrook got fifth place.

The Mini-Sprint A Feature was a pretty clean race. J. R. Way of Lexington had the lead at the start of the race until the car gave up power during the second caution. Nic Sutton spun, which brought out that caution, and put him back in the back. Gothenburg driver Jamey Kennicutt restarted with the lead and appeared to be on his way to victory. However, Sutton worked his way through the field, took the lead with two laps to go, and enjoyed the fruits of victory. Kennicutt was followed at the line by fellow Gothenburg driver Rick Putnam, North Platte driver Jeremy Herbst, McCook racer Arden Myers, and the rest of the field. Point leaders Herbst and Kennicutt took the heat race wins.

Randy Miller gave the crowd someone new at the front of the Mini-Sprint field. The Cozad driver snagged the lead of the fifteen lap, caution-free event, at the start of the race, and did his best to run away and hide. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg started on row five, but by the time he got to second place, fellow heat race Miller had successfully gotten some distance and lapped car behind himself and in front of Jamey to take a big win. Rick Putnam of Gothenburg made it a Dawson County sweep of the top three spots. Arden Myers of McCook finished in fourth place, while Toph Harmon of Holbrook held on for fifth place.

Getting a car on it’s side is not a bad thing, as proven by Jeremy Herbst in the Mini-Sprint class. He ended on his side after a tangle in his heat race. He was put back on his wheels, pushed started, rejoined the field, and won that race. In the feature, he was less dramatic, taking the lead on the front stretch and never looked back en route to the win. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg was put to the back after passing before the cone while running in second place, but he was able to get back to that spot at the end. Birthday boy Arden Myers of McCook finished in third, ahead of McCook trio Darren Berry, John Huffman, and heat winner Brent Hazlitt.

A good crowd of Mini-Sprints encouraged officials to run three heat races and a B Feature. Jeff Wignall of Alliance, Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, and Bob DeRouchey of Fort Collins, Co. took the three heat race wins. Arden Myers of McCook and Greg Billings of Frederick, Co. were the top two in the B Feature, and the main event was set. On the first lap, four cars got together, with Billings being the cue ball that got shot into the air. The car was not damaged, and he lined back up in the field. Jamey Kennicutt took the lead on the restart, and was soon joined out front by Herbst and DeRouchey. Jim Mason of North Platte ended the night on his side on lap nine, which led to the final red flag for the class. After the green was again displayed, Kennicutt again pulled out front, let Herbst and DeRouchey battle for a while, and finally broke a long string of wins Herbst had on the division. DeRouchey dropped out late, allowing Herbst some breathing room in second place. Bob Swedeen of Alliance finished in third place. Billings ended his good run in fourth place, and Rick Putnam of Gothenburg finished in fifth place.

Jeremy Herbst rolled his Mini-Sprint in his heat race early in the night, then rolled to the A Feature win later in the night. With a borrowed wing, he started from row six and took the lead from Josh Sabin of North Platte before the half way lap. Sabin had one of his best ever runs, and was able to hold off sixth row starter Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg for second place. They were followed by heat winner Arden Myers of McCook and Toph Harmon of Cambridge. Meddie Cote of Cozad took the other heat win.

The Mini-Sprint A Feature made the entire ten laps of their feature without a stoppage of action for a caution. Darren Berry of McCook took the lead at the start and held on for quite a while. A bobble in turn three gave Jeremy Herbst an opening underneath Berry, and he shot off for the lead. Heat winner Herbst could not be shaken from the top spot by Berry. Bob Swedeen of Alliance got by Arden Myers of McCook for the third position, and Brent Kaus of Norton, Ks. came home in fifth place.

Jeremy Herbst continued his domination of the Mini-Sprint class. He won his heat race, then blasted off to the lead as the field came to the front stretch on the first lap. He left everyone in his dust, including heat winner Nic Sutton of Arvada, Co., who finished in second place. Arden Myers of McCook held off newcomer John Webster of North Platte for third. They were followed by John Huffman of McCook.

The Mini Sprint class was the only division to get their entire show in. Toph Harmon of Holbrook again paced the early laps of the fifteen lap A Feature, but cautions kept the field close. Heat winner Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg assumed the lead nearly half way in the race, bringing North Platte driver Jeremy Herbst with him. Herbst began working on Kennicutt, and, as they came to take the white flag, made the winning pass on the Gothenburg driver. Kennicutt stayed ahead of Harmon for third place, who was followed by heat winner Randy Miller of Cozad and Jim Mason of North Platte.

The Mini-Sprints were at their high water mark, running three heat races, won by Toph Harmon of Holbrook, Randy Miller of Cozad, and Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Co. They ran an outstanding A Feature, with only caution on the opening lap, then following that up with twenty unabated laps. Toph Harmon had the lead at the start of the race, soon joined near the front by Miller. Harmon was having his best ever run, and although he tried, Miller could not deny him the lead. When they caught a slower car, Jeremy Herbst caught them, and zoomed by both of them as they slowed to set up to get by the car. Herbst took the win, but Harmon finished his best ever run with his best ever second place finish. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg snuck by Miller for fourth place. DeRouchey was fifth.

Jeremy Herbst doubled his pleasure in the Mini-Sprint division. Jeremy and his brother Justin were similar to the Brown brothers, as they finished in first and second place in the first A main. Arden Myers, Darren Berry, and Mark Eiler, all from McCook rounded up the top five. After winning the night’s heat race, Herbst followed Berry for several laps until finding a way around him to sweep the night’s Mini-Sprint races. Berry was able to hold off Nic Sutton of Arvada, Co. for second place. Justin Herbst finished in fourth place, while youngster John Huffman of McCook earned his first top five finish.

The races started a little late for the night after the chain on Lexington driver Suzanne Way’s Mini-Sprint snapped and hit her in the arm during hot laps. Paramedics took a look at her, and x-rays were taken, but no bones were broken. In the feature event, Meddie Cote of Cozad took off like a tornado and stormed out to a lead. Bob Swedeen chased him down and gained the lead on lap four. Jeremy Herbst of North Platte and Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Co. began a march to the front and tried to attack Swedeen’s lead. The heat race winner was not affected, and was able to maintain his stronghold on the lead to take the Mini-Sprint A Feature win. Herbst and DeRouchey finished in second and third. Rick Putnam of Gothenburg finished in fourth place, ahead of Cote. Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg was also a heat winner for the night.

The largest gathering of Mini-Sprints for the year brought to the fans a pretty good fifteen lap race. Meddie Cote of Cozad dodged a tornado on the way to the track and stormed out to the front of the field. Trophy Dash winner Jeremy Herbst started on row five, but quickly found his way to the front of the pack. Arden Myers of McCook was also in the top pack until mechanical woes dropped his speed, and others were not ready for that, which resulted in a small pileup near the end of the race. Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Co. had moved into second place by this time and tried to take the lead from Herbst as Herbst did to him the night before. However, Jeremy was able to make it two wins in two nights. DeRouchey was followed at the line by fellow Colorado driver Greg Billings of Frederick, Gothenburg racer Jamey Kennicutt, and Cote. The heat races were won by Billings, Rick Putnam of Gothenburg, and Randy Miller of Cozad.

A double-digit car count made the Mini-Sprint A Feature more exciting for the fans and the competitors. Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Co. had quite a bit of fun early in the race, showing the way around the track. Darren Berry of McCook and Jeremy Herbst eventually made their way up to DeRouchey, and a three-car battle for the lead occurred. Herbst got by Berry on the next-to-last caution, and had an excellent start on the last caution to sneak by the Colorado driver and took the win. DeRouchey and Berry were followed by Arden Myers of McCook and Greg Billings of Frederick, Co. to round out the top five. Myers and Berry were also the heat race winners for the night.

The Mini-Sprint A Feature began with Josh Sabin of North Platte taking the lead, but the car lost power on the fifth lap with him out front, and he went from first to first out of the race. Arden Myers of McCook inherited the lead. He was followed closely by Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg and Jeremy Herbst. Herbst took care of Kennicutt on the high side, then waited for his fellow heat race winner to slip up on the track to drive under him and take the lead on lap ten. Herbst held on for the remaining laps to earn the win. Myers held onto second place, and Kennicutt was third. Rick Putnam of Gothenburg and Bob Swedeen of Alliance rounded out the top five.

The Mini-Sprint A Feature was a bizarre affair. Heat winner Greg Billings of Frederick, Co. had the lead until McCook driver Darren Berry snuck by him. The two were running nose-to-tail well out front of Arden Myers, who was having some motor troubles. When the leaders came around for two laps to go, Billings took a right turn for the pits, and Berry’s wheels locked up, sending him for a wild spin. That handed the lead to Myers, who stayed ahead of Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, who had to borrow the car of Toph Harmon of Holbrook to start the race, for his first ever McCook Speedway A Feature victory in nearly nine years of trying

After some water on their track, the Mini-Sprints worked it in and had a racey race track to do battle and have a caution-free event. Josh Sabin of North Platte won his heat race and had four good laps out front of his A Feature race. Unfortunately, he had to drop out before the end of the event with mechanical woes. Rick Putnam took the lead from him on the fifth lap. Putnam would be hounded by Jamey Kennicutt of Gothenburg, who was being hounded by heat winner Jeremy Herbst of North Platte. The battle for second place gave Putnam enough breathing room to work his way for the win. Herbst nearly took the second spot, but Kennicutt came back to earn it at the finish line. Cozad drivers Randy Miller and Meddie Cote finished in fourth and fifth places.

Darren Berry won one for his mom on Mother’s Day weekend in the Mini-Sprint division. Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Co. was the heat race winner and had the lead of the A Feature until the wheels fell off of his run when he lost his left front tire. Berry took the lead, and held a steady low line. Jeremy Herbst of North Platte caught Berry and tried to get the win for his mom, but the high groove was not the place to be for his car, and that kept Berry the top son. Arden Myers of McCook finished in third place, Bret Kaus of Norton, Ks. was fourth, and Brent Hazlitt of McCook rounded out the top five.

The Mini-Sprint A Feature was also decided near the last lap. Bob DeRouchey of Ft. Collins, Co. was the rabbit for most of the race. Near the end of the race, Jeremy Herbst became the top hound to challenge the Colorado driver for the lead. Herbst took the lead as they came to take the white flag, and kept his foot in the accelerator to claim the top prize. DeRouchey was followed by Cozad driver Randy Miller, McCook driver Arden Myers, and Gothenburg driver Jamey Kennicutt who, along with Herbst, won the heat races.

Season Opener -

The Mini-Sprints were fast on the big track, but they did face quite a bit of attrition. Nic Sutton or Arvada, Co. broke in both the heat and A Feature while running in the top two spots, and each time he did, Greg Billings of Frederick, Co. was right behind him. Despite messing up his suspension in the A Feature, Billings held on for a third place finish in the feature. Heat winner Darren Berry of McCook was leading the race, but during the red flag period after Toph Harmon of Holbrook had a “Tommy Tip-over”, noticed he lost a line to the radiator and called it a night. Arden Myers of McCook inherited the lead, but once Jeremy Herbst’s motor heated up, he heated up the race, passing everyone and blasting to the finish line with last lap speed under 15 seconds. Myers settled for the runner-up spot.
